Motivation: Stop Looking for It Elsewhere

How is it possible that people like Elon Musk can put in 100-hour work weeks while most can barely get by?

How did entrepreneurs like Philip Kimmey, Louis Perna, and many other entrepreneurs -- all below the age of 30 -- build multi-million dollar businesses [https://www.inc.com/magazine/201705/30-under-30-2017.html?cid=hmpopmag3] out of seemingly simple ideas?

Apart from a dream, a vision, and a relentless drive, what else do they have? What makes them tick? What drives them? What makes a few people wealthy while others barely live paycheck to paycheck?

It’s called motivation.

But where do you get motivation? Where do you look for it? Do you get it from the university you attend, the people you hang out with, the people you work with, the mentors you carefully vet and choose? Do you get it from books?

Daniel H. Pink [http://www.danpink.com/drive-the-summaries/], in his seminal book Drive, summarizes his take on motivation:

“When it comes to motivation, there’s a gap between what science knows and what business does. Our current business operating system–which is built around external, carrot-and-stick motivators–doesn’t work and often does harm.

We need an upgrade.

And the science shows the way. This new approach has three essential elements: 1. Autonomy – the desire to direct our own lives. 2. Mastery — the urge to get better and better at something that matters. 3. Purpose — the yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves.”

If Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose are the real motivating factors, everything businesses are currently doing goes against these findings. We are still using carrots and sticks.

So, where do you go looking for motivation?

The answer: Within yourself.

You is where it starts

The road to success, creating wealth, and living a lifestyle that allows you to do all that you wanted to do is going to be a lonely one. Most people are not on that path. Most of the people you hang out with can’t give what this path demands.

That leaves you with “you and your dream”. Your dream begins with you. You accompany yourself in this journey. You are your own mentor, guide, philosopher, and friend. You are essentially your own support system.

Motivation is within you

Stop looking elsewhere for motivation: you won’t find it in self-help books. Your friends will not understand. Your family might or might not understand this pain you are willing to go through to make it big!

Don’t seek external stimuli for motivating yourself.  Once you manage to keep motivating yourself, everything else just falls into place: mastery of your skills, the desire to direct your own life, a clear vision of where and who you want to be, effective use of your time, and the ultimate purpose for which you are ready to head on this path.

You are the source

It’s time for you to draw up a new avatar of yourself where you are several notches beyond ordinary.  Instead of looking for motivation, be the “motivation”.

With your vision, deeds, effort, focus, and efficiency, be the unicorn that others can look up to. Make it a point to depend on your own strength and energy.  Everything you need is already within you.
